The psychology behind video

Like everything, there’s a psychology behind our reaction to different types of media, and video is no exception. So after you’ve read this, hopefully you’ll see why it’s an absolute necessity to incorporate video in your future marketing plan. 

Text and regression

It might happen during this very article – or it might not. But we’re pretty sure that at al least one point in your life you’ve read a text only to have to re-read it again because you have absolutely no idea what that page was about. That’s called regression.
So, when you spend all of that time writing words upon words about your company, product or service, you’re actually making it really hard for your future clients fully conceive your message. 

Just think about it: How much do you really remember from all the “important” tests you took in school about historical people and the things they did during their lifetime?

You could quite easily translate that to your company’s ‘about’ page. Yes, we’re being krass, but the truth is that you don’t even have to go as far as several years to forget texts you read.

Studies show that viewers retain 95% of a video’s message compared to 10% when reading text and 80% of customers remember a video they viewed in the past month.

The Qiwio team put this to the test actually. We had one of our developers, Calle, find a video ad campaign that was unknown to our founder Amin and our Marketing manager Sara.

Calle then wrote a very detailed transcript of that video for Sara to read only once, and Amin got to watch the actual ad, also only once. 

They then separately recorded how much they remembered and the results were just as predicted: Very different. Sara couldn’t even remember the brand name, nor understand fully what the product was, while Amin ended up wanting to buy it.

Video = success

In 2006, the marketing director of Blendtec, George Wright, decided to show how powerful their company’s blended was by creating a series of YouTube videos called “Will It Blend”.
Blendtec was essentially unknown at that point and their marketing budget was only $50 (!) so Wright decided to film the company’s founder, Tom Dickson, using the blender to destroy all kinds of stuff – marbles, CDs, lighters, a rake and even iPhones and iPads.

Viewers were (obviously) hooked and within the first 2 years of “Will it Blend”, sales for the blender increases by 700%!

This tells us a really valuable story about just that – storytelling with video. When you start creating content that isn’t only showing off, or trying to sell a product or service, but also content that triggers other value points such as, in this case, humour – you gain a completely different customer base. They are not only going to buy your product, they are going to recommend it to others, come back to your website/SoMe channel to continue to follow you.
This is when you go from being “just a product” – to have created true brand loyalty.

And what is that golden word that we all try to nail down? Oh yes, that’s right: Retention.


In this day and age, we are competing over consumers attention on all online platforms, and it’s in our DNA to react to moving content over static. We’ve talked about consumer behaviour and that most of them prefer video content over text or images, plus that in order for our message to stick with our audience, we need to show them video.
